Everyone’s property values in the county rose this past year, which consequently increased their property taxes as well. The county doesn’t have a perfect system for valuating properties, which is why sometimes they overvalue by between 10% and 30%. That means you could be paying more in property taxes than you need.
If your home’s value is too high, you have the option to appeal it. To appeal the county’s valuation, reach out to a real estate agent to help you find three or four of the best comparable homes in your area that have sold recently. Those sold homes will help you establish a better, more accurate valuation for your property based on the market on January 1 this year. A successful appeal can save you hundreds of dollars on your taxes for the next year.
